Shirtless militants to picket DOLE
'Nakedness' to symbolize unemployment, appeal for government support – group
There is no better symbolism for unemployment than literal nakedness – losing even the shirt off one's back, so to speak – so members of the urban poor group Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (Kadamay), with several stripped down to the waist, will troop to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) office at Intramuros, Manila, seeking to cast unemployment as a crucial election issue and to push for the group's demand for “direct government support” for the unemployed and underemployed.
“While we understand that DOLE soon stands to have a change of leadership, as is common with new presidents, its top policymakers must nevertheless consider these proposals now and prepare to present these to the new leadership,” said Leona 'Nanay Leleng' Zarsuela, Kadamay chair. “We are also extending this message to the presidentiables. We need them to have a say.”
