MEDIA ADVISORY
For Tomorrow, May 14
The march of hundreds of North Triangle, Quezon City urban poor, facing demolition for the QC-Central Business District (QC-CBD) project, to the National Housing Authoriry (NHA) central office this morning resulted in a small victory – that of a status quo (“walang galawan”) pledge from the agency as the poor's demands are forwarded to the Urban Triangle Development (Tri-Dev) Commission,
However, groups led by the Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (Kadamay), Contra-CBD, Anakpawis-North Triangle, Nagkakaisang Naninirahan sa North Triangle (N3T) Alliance and San Roque Community Council (SRCC), which led the 700-strong march today, are not about to become complacent.
Tomorrow marks the lapse of an initial 30-day notice given out by the NHA to the residents of Sitio San Roque in North Triangle. Despite today's dialogue, the residents will still watch out for any underhanded attempts by the government to commence the forcible demolition.
Tomorrow morning, hundreds of North Triangle urban poor will again gather and build a 'human barricade', along the community's North EDSA side, to show their determination to fend off any demolition attempt and defend their right to shelter and livelihood.
The QC-CBD aims to build a Makati-style business district in the area covered by the North and East Triangles, threatening to displace around 25,000 urban poor families. It is a national government project by the Arroyo administration and is considered a 'legacy project' of outgoing city mayor Feliciano 'Sonny' Belmonte.
