Group warns of US 'meddling' in Corona impeachment case

PRESS RELEASE l 18 January 2012

Urban poor group Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (Kadamay) warned of possible US "meddling" in the impeachment proceedings of SC Chief Justice Renato Corona, as evidenced by the World Bank's (WB) "timely" admission of the authenticity of the Judicial Reform Support Project (JRSP) report which forms part of the evidence against the chief justice.

"The United States seems to have taken its side in this political rift," said Gloria Arellano, Kadamay secretary general. "And while by no means do we support Corona, we call on the people to be vigilant against yet another case of US meddling in our internal affairs."

According to the group, it is telling how the report surfaced only now after ten years of the project's existence.

"The JRSP may have been a just a way for the US to exert its influence on the past and present Supreme Courts. But now that it has no more use for Corona -- who's now openly clashing with the the US's new hatchet man here -- it decides to 'leak' this report in order to do away with him," said Arellano.

According to the group, the list of laws and policies in the Philippines favoring 'imperialist' interests has been long enough to show that US intervention runs deep. The landmark, seemingly 'pro-people' decision of the Corona court to finally redistribute Hacienda Luisita has threatened these interests, and the US will move to regain its grip.

"If we are going to remove Corona, let us do it based on the interest of our people, not because of the prodding of an outside force," Arellano said.###
