Ka Mameng leads protests at Mendiola on Aquino’s 52nd birthday

PRESS RELEASE (08 February 2012)

As President Noynoy Aquino celebrates his birthday with the quake victims in Negros Oriental, Carmen ‘Ka Mameng’ Deunida, leader of urban poor group Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (Kadamay), who also celebrates her 84th year today, led the militants’ protests today in Mendiola.

Kadamay joined the protest under Alyansa Kontra Demolisyon, a broad network of citizens against what it calls as the ‘demolition rampage’ of the Aquino regime on urban poor communities.

The protesters burnt a big birthday gift, with an enlarged image of Aquino’s face at the foot of Mendiola, and sang birthday jingles incorporated with demolition terms. They wished for a nationwide moratorium on all cases of demolition of urban poor communities nationwide.

“We are only giving back to Aquino what he sugar-coated as his administration’s flagship economic program—Public-Private Partnership,” said Estrelieta Bagasbas, the network’s spokesperson, and a local leader from North Triangle, QC.

“While Aquino wants us to see that he cares so much about the victims of the recent quake, the people should not forget that tens of thousands of other urban poor Filipinos are in constant fear of demolition of their homes,” Bagasbas added.

Meanwhile, in an interview with the media, Ka Mameng cited her wish for the president.

“The urban poor will never get tired of calling on the president to truly serve the interest of the Filipinos, especially the poor, as well as to junk policies that favors more the interest of the foreign businesses than its people,” Ka Mameng said.###
