'No doubt about it!'
This is how a militant urban poor group considers the statement of Former Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno that the continued government inaction on incessant oil price hikes will lead to unrest.
This morning, Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (Kadamay) members staged a lightning rally from Mendiola Peace arch to the Gate 7 of Malacanang as they gear up for the big urban poor protest on Friday March 23 against the Aquino regime’s inaction on oil price hikes and demolition of homes of the urban poor.
The group, together with Alyansa Kontra Demolisyon and Koalisyon ng Progresibong Manggagawa at Mamamayan plans on Friday to mobilize some 5,000 urban poor nationwide, as different urban poor groups in every city in Metro Manila has expressed their commitment to join the ‘giant urban poor mob’ to ultimately bring to his knees the president whom they say has always acted against the interests of the sector.
March 23 is a protest action in the eve of the 20th anniversary of Urban Development and Housing Act (UDHA) or RA7279, which Kadamay says, other than Oil Deregulation Law has worsen the plight of the urban poor in the country as it legitimizes the demolition of urban poor communities in the interest of the capitalists.
"Aquino's continued subservience to the interest of the few business elite, as the poor Filipinos find it harder and harder every day to make end meet due to soaring price of transportation and basic commodities, as threats of demolition continues to haunt the sector, the Palace should be more concerned of protecting itself from the possibility of a great unrest that will certainly haunt Aquino in the days to come," says Gloria Arellano, Kadamay national secretary-general.
'Noynoying' may be an understatement
According to the group’s statement, “More than the 'noynoying' label that the militants tag the President, we believe and will remain vigilant against the fact that Aquino is not just lazy, insensitive, or inefficient as that nation’s leader.”
“As his showing in his nearly two years in office, he is a human right aggressor, a very inhuman and selfish president who is the protector of the oil cartel and the big businessmen who ransack the wealth of this nation,” said Arellano.
Kadamay says that Aquino's denial to act on the issue of oil price hikes merely illustrates the protection he gives the oil cartel who has been taking profit from the suffering of the people.
"More than being insensitive to the demand of his people, he is a defender of every anti-people policies and laws, including the Oil Deregulation Law and the UDHA, that only favor the interest of the few business elites," says Arellano.
'Noynoying' as a tag may be a strong political slap on the face of Aquino, Kadamay says, but it may also be a big underestimation of the 'anti-people' acts Aquino has committed against the poor. "The urban poor will never be blind nor passive of the ‘crimes’ he committed against the sector," Arellano said.
The group has recently called Aquino 'demolition king' for his unpopular penchant for the demolition of urban poor communities to give way to 'development projects' that has never actually alleviated the plight of the urban poor, but only enrich the cavern of wealth of the businessmen.
In the days to come, Kadamay has promised to stage more militant actions, and mobilize thousands of urban poor nationwide and in the capital region against the anti-poor policies of the Aquino administration.
The giant urban poor mob scheduled on March 23 against oil price hikes and the demolition of homes of the urban poor will just be the start of bigger mobilization, aiming to expose the ‘real’ face of the US-Aquino regime.###
