Presidential candidates told: Stick with real issues, please
Group to propose “radical” measures to uplift poor
As the presidential campaigns seem to have descended into a morass of personal attacks and mudslinging, the urban poor group Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (Kadamay) urges the candidates: Stick with the real issues, please.
Along these lines, the group is about to propose a radical, although not entirely unheard-of, framework to immediately address the poor's fast-sinking living conditions: direct state support for the unemployed and underemployed, through unemployment benefits and the setting-up of 'unemployment offices' throughout the country.
As a way to launch this campaign, less than two weeks before the nation marks Labor Day and less than a month before the elections, members of the group will gather at Plaza Miranda in Manila tomorrow and plaster the faces of the four main protagonists in these elections -- Aquino, Villar, Estrada, and Teodoro -- with signs saying, "Stick with the real issues!" and bearing calls for the proposed new unemployment measures.
