This afternoon, members of Kadamay and Anakpawis Partylist staged a protest action at Chino Roces Monument in Mendiola, and attempted to go around the steel-and-barbed-wire barriers for a closer shot at Malacanang. The group scuffled with blocking policemen but was stopped from going any further. The following is the group's statement.
STATEMENT
26 April 2010
This is Ms. Arroyo's last warning.
For the past few months, the people have been walking a very fine line: that of seething over Ms. Arroyo's disgraced, miserable nine-year rule, and bearing with the remaining days until she is finally, mercifully, replaced.
Yet Ms. Arroyo seems to keep probing the limits of our people, continually rubbing salt on an already open, infested wound.
The last few days have been telling. To the outrage of many, Justice Secretary Alberto Agra decided to clear two Ampatuan family members from murder charges stemming from the Maguindanao Massacre. Word then comes out that Ms. Arroyo has appointed her personal manicurist and gardener to government posts.
This is on top of the long list of insults that Ms. Arroyo has bestowed upon the Filipino people. Early last month, she barefacedly announced to the world that her "economic achievements" has resulted in "progress", even as her own longtime economic adviser, Joey Salceda (who has now jumped shipped to the Liberal Party), admitted that the ranks of the poor has grown for the past nine years.
We challenged her then, to get down from her throne in Malacanang and "tell that to our face", to say that again looking into the eyes of the poor. We doubt that she ever can. One need only look around, or at the data sheets: Poverty has risen, and unemployment and hunger has reached record-levels during her term.
Her Easter Sunday message read: Let us unite as one nation. We howled in protest: It is you, Ma'am, that has been the very cause of disunity and unrest among our people, what with your clear designs to maintain your grip on power.
And yet, Ms. Arroyo seems intent to further pile insult upon insult onto the people, seemingly not satisfied with poverty and hunger and corruption and human rights abuses... and running for Congress in Pampanga, which is yet another insult and a worrisome scenario that she will evade prosecution and eventually regain the country's top post.
You have tested the people far enough, Ms. Arroyo. This is your last warning, before the people's wrath will no longer be assuaged by the promise of change, and vent its full force upon you.
End the US-Arroyo regime! Stop Gloria's plans of maintaining power! Arrest and punish Gloria Arroyo for her crimes to the people!
