'Unfortunate' suicide should not slow down investigations -- Kadamay

NEWS RELEASE
Feb.09,2011

The militant urban poor group, Kadamay, express its disbelief regarding the untimely death of former DND Secretary Angelo Reyes. “We extend our condolences to the grieving family and relatives of Mr. Reyes,” the group said.

While the group described it as an unfortunate incident, they can only surmise that Mr. Reyes carried "heavy baggage" that led him to take his own life. Up until his death, Mr. Reyes had been accused of amassing enormous wealth from the AFP funds, based on the latest revelations in the Senate by his former budget officer Lt. Col. George Rabusa.

“Much as we want him and the other officers involved to face a thorough investigation and accept the consequences of their actions, we regret his decision to avoid these accusations by killing himself,” the group said. “However, his untimely demise will not clear the ‘cloud of doubt’ lingering the AFP of widescale graft and corruption.”

The group asked all parties tasked to probe the web of irregularities in the AFP to pursue their investigations without let-up. “They should not slow down in deference to Mr. Reyes’ death, though it is a big blow to the people’s quest for truth and reforms in the AFP. More importantly, based on the credible testimonies of witnesses, it is enough to file necessary charges against the officers and personalities involved and prosecute them pronto.”
